Hi friends! Continuing our Greece travel series with the third (and final!) island we traveled to – Mykonos! This famous party island is truly a world of its own – and we loved it! 🙂
Arriving at Mykonos:
As I mentioned in my overall Greece blog post, all of our inter-island travels were via ferries. Our ferry from Paros to Mykonos was a little over an hour, and wasn’t too bad on the SeaJets ferry we took!
Just want to note that our ferry arrived in Paros about 30 minutes late, so we obviously arrived in Mykonos a little later than we expected. But, again, we didn’t have much planned for this day anyway so it wasn’t a huge deal. Due to the inconsistency in ferry times, I’d recommend not making any big plans or reservations close to your arrival time.
Mykonos Hotel:
We stayed at Mr & Mrs White Mykonos, which is apart of the small luxury brand of hotels in Greece called Mr & Mrs White. This hotel was definitely our favorite in all of our stays in Greece! It’s nested at the top of a hill, so the views from the onsite pool are incredible, and the lobby itself has a very airy and open vibe, which was so nice.
Our room was also *significantly* larger than any of our other hotels, so that was a nice upgrade. I did, however, read a ton of horrible reviews online (while we were staying there lol oops), that this property was going through renovations this year, and some people had been put in rooms where renovations were happening right outside of them, which ruined their stay. I guess we got lucky because we had no issues with any of that, and wouldn’t have even known the property was undergoing any reno’s until I read it online.
This property is located in the Platis Gialos area of the island. Other than being somewhat close to the famous Scorpios restaurant & beach club, it’s about a 15 minute drive to Mykonos Town, and a little further to the northern part of the island where there are beaches and more water activities. We enjoyed staying in Platis Gialos – it was a bit quieter (which we wanted for our honeymoon), but still had a decent amount of great restaurants right on the water, and an easy bus ride to the city. Just a heads up if you’re trying to figure out what part of the island to stay on!
Mykonos Restaurants and Bars:
- Yo’Mamas Burger – It was located right next to the bus stop in Mykonos Town so we grabbed a quick lunch here and it’s pretty good for fast casual dining!
- Negrita Mykonos – SO good. 1000% recommend. Definitely pricey (this was where we got charged €8 for a bottle of water…) but the cocktails are amazing, and the entire vibe of this place is on point.
- D’Angelos – grabbed quick drinks here but we were told the food here is AMAZING. Sad we didn’t actually try it but it is highly recommended!
- Avli Tou Thodori – so so good! This restaurant was recommended by our hotel, as it’s right down the street from Mr & Mrs White in Platis Gialos. But the pasta and pizza were SO good, and then they brought us the most beautiful and delicious dessert ever. Our stomachs were actually hurting afterwards from eating so much and being overstuffed haha but thank goodness for that hike back up to our hotel.
- Bonita – this cute little fast casual Mexican spot was so vibey – they played loud Mexican music and people were just dancing. The food was decent, but the drinks were great, and the bartender was so nice and chatty. Loved it!
Mykonos Must-Do’s:
- Walk around Mykonos Town – this is an absolute MUST if you’re visiting Mkyonos. There are several cute spots along the way to stop and grab drinks, quick bites, or shop! It’s so lively and fun to just walk around.
- Scorpios Mykonos – also bummed we didn’t get to do this one, but this popular restaurant/beach club came to us HIGHLY recommended. Try your best to make a reservation for sunset *early on* here as it gets booked pretty quickly, and sometimes they’re not even honored (that’s what our hotel told us).
- Visit the Windmills – Mykonos is known as “the island of the winds”, and the windmills are a huge part of the islands history! They’re all around the island, but there are some right in Little Venice you can visit.
- Watch the sunset and have dinner in Little Venice – this area is one of the most scenic and beautiful areas of the island, and the perfect area to enjoy drinks/dinner and watch the sunset! There are tons of restaurants to choose from right along the water. 🙂
Getting Around Mykonos Island
Unfortunately, getting around Greek islands isn’t as simple as ordering up an Uber and hopping in. Most of the islands are extremely limited on taxis (most only have about 30 taxis across the entire island…), and private transfers through hotels are generally pretty pricey as well.
As I mentioned earlier, I highly recommend arranging a private transfer with your hotel prior to your arrival, if possible. Unfortunately, I don’t have a WhatsApp number to share like I did for Santorini, but you may be able to find one online somewhere.
In Mykonos, we either walked places, or used the city bus! The city bus was surprisingly easy to use, efficient, and CHEAP. It was about a 15 minute ride from Platis Gialos to Mykonos Town, and only €1.8 per person, one way. Also, the city bus has pretty convenient bus stops all around the island, so you can easily just look up where the closest stop is to you, or ask your hotel/locals.
Our Eat, Drink & Be Merry Recommendations:
Eat: Avli Tou Thodori
Drink: Negrita Mykonos
Be Merry: Scorpios Mykonos – even though we didn’t actually get to do this one, I’d still highly recommend it from the rec’s we received!
